Dealing with hot flushes in summer

9 January 2023

Let’s face it, summers can be pretty hot, especially in Australia and sweating is normal. But having hot flushes when it’s hot is next level torture.

What causes hot flushes?

We don’t know. Scientists have recently discovered a specific chemical that works in your brain regulate your temperature. Levels of this neurokinin B (NKB) are affected by plummeting oestrogen levels and can be directly targeted by drugs without needing hormone treatments. Watch this space. These new treatments are coming!

We do need some good news in the hot flush space. Because if you get them, they last an average of 7.4 years. The earlier they start, the longer they go on. One in 20 women are super flushers and will never stop!

How to manage your hot flushes this summer

  1. Dress in layers that are easy to remove so that if one happens you can calmy remove a layer and look cool doing it! You also need to quickly put your layers back on when you get that post flush chill!!
  2. Carry a fan. One in your bag, one in your desk at home, one in the car. Be prepared!
  3. Have cool water nearby. Keep a chilled reusable insulated bottle of water in your bag or on your desk for quick relief.
  4. See your doctor. Honestly whatever your concerns about various treatments there is something to suit your requirements. HRT (Hormone replacement therapy) is certainly the most effective treatment we have right now- 96-98% effective. But for women uncomfortable with this option, we have others. I promise!
  5. Consider hypnotherapy. Not for those with a skinnier wallet, Hypnotherapy has been found to be effective for hot flushes. But you need a few sessions for it to work.
  6. You can consider complimentary therapies like soy isoflavones, black cohosh and other supplements. In studies, the results are inconsistent and they’re not much better than a placebo. But if they work for you, many do no harm, so feel free to give them a crack.

Be cool and enjoy your summer!
